The whole room seems to hold their breath at a baby’s birth.
But what if there is no reassuring cry?
What if the scene is the ECWA Hospital located in a little isolated town called Egbe? But if you are Nurse Femi Blessing Bella, Head of Maternity at the hospital, you know exactly what to do.
“On May 4, a newborn delivered via emergency cesarean section was admitted with severe birth asphyxia, an APGAR score of 2, and (needed) immediate resuscitation. Utilizing the protocols established in our recent respiratory management training organized by Nurse Ray, we transitioned the infant to CPAP.” Nurse Blessing shares.
Ray St. John, a pediatric ICU nurse, and his wife Meaghan, spent April volunteering at Egbe. Ray explains, “I recognized the neonatal CPAP they had, so I organized a training. I heard from Nurse Blessing just days after we got home.”
Nurse Blessing continues, “The infant’s oxygen saturation rose to 98%. We observed immediate improvement in the work of breathing and a more stable respiratory pattern.”
“I was so impressed she successfully handled the CPAP by herself.” Ray continues, “I think the national electricity came on for less than an hour the month we were serving at Egbe. We’d talk about what consistent electricity could unlock one day — better monitoring, new equipment, and higher-level care.” It got so the nurses would chorus back “one day” with knowing smiles every time Ray talked about the future.
Can I encourage you to stop right now and to pray?
