The Transformative Power of Surgery at Egbe Hospital

We were recently moved by a story shared by Dr. Chidi, one of the dedicated general surgeons at Egbe Hospital in rural Nigeria. His story truly highlights the impact of medical missions and inspires us as we continue building the new surgical center at Egbe Hospital.

“We recently cared for a young man in his mid-thirties who had been tragically shot and abandoned by the roadside. He arrived at our emergency room in critical condition. Despite the severity of his injuries, our team immediately began life-saving treatment, rushing him into surgery in the middle of the night. During the operation, we discovered extensive internal damage. Multiple organs were affected – his liver, stomach, intestines, diaphragm, and lungs were all compromised. His condition was grave, but by God’s grace, we were able to stabilize him. We placed chest tubes, repaired the organ damage, and treated his lungs. It was a long and complex surgery, but we are so thankful that the Lord spared his life. This young man not only made a remarkable recovery, but he also left the hospital walking on his own and with a renewed faith in Christ. We give all the glory to God for this outcome.”

Stories like this are reminders of the desperate need for access to surgery in rural Nigeria, where there is only ONE surgeon for every 2.5 million people. This is why the new surgical center at Egbe Hospital is so vital – it will save lives and offer critical care to countless people in need.

The new facility will include dedicated areas for pre-op consultations, recovery, and separate surgical wards for men, women, and children. We’re also renovating the current surgical space to include four operating theaters, with the goal of performing more than 100 surgeries each month. We’re incredibly excited about the progress and the hope it brings to the community!

Listen as Dr. Malikidogo, Medical Director and General Surgeon, and Dr. Chidi, share their thoughts on how the new surgery center will transform healthcare in the region and help meet urgent surgical needs.
