Surrounded by His Presence: An Emergency Nurse’s Volunteer Opportunity

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forever more.

As I arrived in Egbe, I noticed the beautiful hills that surround this town. I felt at ease as I was warmly welcomed by everyone I met. My worries that I might feel lonely as a solo missionary nurse were immediately quashed. It was easy to fall in love with my fellow nurses and the staff that serve at ECWA Hospital in Egbe.

As an emergency nurse, I had the opportunity to spend four weeks in the Emergency Department. It was a great joy to be a part of the team. I focused mainly on wound care, of the many chronic wounds being treated in the department. This gave me the great privilege of getting to know some of Egbe’s residents. When the students started their clinical time, I was able to continue teaching aseptic and sterile techniques.

It was fun to watch them develop skills in handling the instruments and sharpening their assessment skills.

I am deeply grateful for the relationships we formed.

Four weeks did not feel long enough!

ECWA Hospital Egbe is a true light in the community. The insecurities in the region have impacted the patient numbers. But the staff are resilient and faithful.

As the mountains surround Egbe, so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forevermore.
