Egbe Revisited: A Journey of Faith and Growth

“And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.” ”

Jacob revisited Bethel, and God appeared to him. In 2025, I revisited Egbe, and God’s presence was undeniable, revealing itself in “showers of blessings” and answered prayers.

Walking through the ECWA College of Nursing Sciences, I was reminded of my early nursing days. The professors demonstrated both deep knowledge and genuine compassion—qualities that are not just taught but also caught by their students. The construction projects that were in their early stages last year now stand as a testament to progress: the Surgical Center is nearing completion, and two new nursing dorms are fully built.

From the moment I arrived, the McKenzie Manor staff and Volunteer Coordinator Kathy made me feel welcome. Missionaries Rick and Martha were deeply engaged in their work with the Fulani people and the Music School, embodying the mission’s heart for both healthcare and evangelism.

A New Era in Mission Aviation

One of the most exciting moments of my visit happened before I even arrived in Egbe. While traveling from Abuja to Egbe, I had the privilege of joining Don Campion (Egbe Medical Mission Leader) and three leaders from Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF)—Stan, Rick, and Souleymane. Their conversation turned to plans for a new aviation route from Abuja to Egbe, reducing an arduous 7-8 hour drive to a 1-hour flight. I was witnessing history unfold!

Before reaching Egbe, our group stopped for an audience with His Royal Highness Oba Ayodele Irukera, Ajaamoto II, the Elegbe of Egbe. A special ceremony was held, celebrating the revitalization of Egbe’s airfield. Upon reaching the ECWA compound, our arrival was marked with a joyful celebration featuring elementary and nursing students, local dignitaries, and community members.

A Divine Appointment

Throughout the trip, I saw God’s hand at work in both big moments and small encounters. One such moment happened during a visit to Care Africa, where Kathy introduced us to a newlywed couple. When I asked their names, the bride replied, “Tomi.”

Something clicked. “Tomilola?” I asked.

She nodded, and I could hardly believe it—she was the very daughter of my Nigerian nurse friend, for whom I had been praying and even inquired about sending a wedding gift! Meeting her face to face in such an unexpected way was a God sighting that made my entire day.

Training the Next Generation of Nigerian Nurses

Another highlight of my visit was seeing the students I had been praying for progressing in their program. It was inspiring to interact with Okunland students and witness their growth. Alongside fellow U.S. nurse Anna, I had the opportunity to teach students on the ward, sharing both knowledge and faith.

The ECWA College of Nursing Sciences and Hospital are experiencing a shift—a new, younger generation is stepping into leadership and service. Just as Elijah passed his mantle to Elisha, so too is the mantle of medical missions being entrusted to the next generation at Egbe. I was grateful for the chance to mentor Anna, guiding her in what it means to serve as a nurse missionary.

A Faithful God

My time at Egbe reminded me of Titus 3:8:

“This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.”

God is moving in Egbe, answering prayers, and raising up new leaders. This visit reaffirmed my belief that when we say yes to God’s call, He uses us in ways beyond our imagination.

I look forward to seeing what God will continue to do in Egbe—and I pray that many others will join in supporting, serving, and witnessing the incredible work happening in this special place.
