An Honor to Serve: Bringing Hope and Healing in Egbe

When I think about my time in Egbe this past March, the only word that continues to come to mind is honor. It was truly an honor to work side by side with other believers in Nigeria showing compassion and taking care of God’s children. ECWA Hospital Egbe is a beacon of light in a community that finds itself ridden with high levels of poverty. The 110 bed hospital provides tertiary and outpatient care to many in Kogi State as well as people from all over the country of Nigeria. Dr. Ben Malikidogo and team seek to physically care for those entrusted to them but more importantly, they live out the mission of the church. They are the hands and feet of Christ bringing hope and healing to all.

I spent three weeks working with the hospital administrators to digitize the human resource systems so that operational efficiencies were gained. Creating an environment that staff can thrive in allows for a better work life. Staff can now keep track of earned time off and request personal leave using the computer systems. All HR files are being uploaded allowing the administrative staff to maintain electronic records. With the help of the IT head of department Gabriel Obafemi and his colleagues, we were also able to implement a hospital wide communication system using WiFi technology. This system helps ensure real time communication between staff and providers improving care and patient safety. The employees of ECWA Egbe are invested in making this hospital a fantastic place to work as well as a beacon of hope.

The second week I was there, a visiting ophthalmologist came to perform cataract surgeries on patients who had signed up and qualified for surgical intervention. Over 100 patients were operated on during this week. Many of these patients were able to see for the first time in over 20 years. The excitement was palpable. During that week, I led a team of students who cared for the patients pre and postoperative. The Lord provided an opportunity for me to use my skills as a veteran nurse to teach the next generation of staff. I saw students extend a hand in love. They prayed with patients and made them feel valued.

One of the highlights of a trip to this hospital is prayer rounds on Wednesday evenings with Chaplain Rev. Sola Oladele. We visit every single patient and family at the bedside praying for them and listening to their stories. We know that scripture says where two or more are gathered…He is there. I cannot think of a better ministry. Holding hands, praising the Lord together and seeking comfort for the patients was an unbelievable experience. Christ is the center of the mission of this hospital. What an honor to spend three weeks in Nigeria at ECWA Hospital Egbe.
